Open Storage Means "good enough"?
My colleague asked me a roundtable Information SUN Microsystems office in Hong Kong 3 December to visit. After working in a storage vendors themselves years in a marketing role not least, I'm in the ways polishing stories to the point where they sit between science fiction and learned magic. Identification and this is equally difficult.
Sun Open Storage strategy promises to significantly reduce costs for today's generation of storage solutions brand owner such as HP, IBM, EMC, Fujitsu, Dell, HDS and Sun (yes, Sun also offers exclusive) raffle (1) with standard components, if possible, and (2) Much of the basic software that the intelligence behind costly, proprietary storage systems, Sun hopes for business benefits potential of the opinion that comes with a cost of open source storage.
Storage Back to Basics
Most business and systems midrange storage use proprietary software – integrated into the hardware and software add-on for a level of service to hold. Although some hardware components are substantially the same – hard drives, fans, frames and chassis – the software is the unique personality each of its storage systems. This "personality" that gives you five 9s or auto-failover, or the ability to call home when the camera keeps its patients and other fancy features known.
The strategy of open storage and the promise Title
The strategy of open storage, you have to say do not buy expensive components. You can components product and build a storage system with Open Solaris (Sun's case) that the basic intelligence to provide many functions in their own solutions?
The topic? From a technological perspective, the performance will drop slightly. That's why Sun Storage Marketing is the difficulty in finding suitable third party reports reference to determine their demands for better performance back. You may be able to demand better price, but is another question.

In a sense, Sun will rely on the same marketing strategy. Not every company needs five 9s. Not everyone has super fast, super-advanced technologies. Many companies can live with "Good enough". And from this perspective can the sun be able to win customers to their camps – those who are adventurous and has no controls or competition breathing down their throats.
* Only a random comment. Vendors like to use code names for new projects. Most of the time the code name ever come forward and replaced by the correct product. But lately some vendors have begun to publicize the code name for their new products. I was told that Hiwashi, fish Fugu and Toro now part of Japanese culture.
