Stereo Equalizer

How do you hook up a graphic equalizer to a surround sound system.?
Also how do I recognize a DJ equalizer from a home stereo equalizer? Really need to know info as to how to hook the thing up. Two old EQ’s I have each has monitoring buttons. I know the solution is fairly simple but am having difficulty figuring it all out as I try to upgrade to my home surround sound stereo system . Thanks!
A DJ equalizer will be 19″ rack mounted & have XLR inputs & outputs (some also have 1/4″ TRS & Euroblock connectors inputs & outputs).
Most home equalizers have RCA inputs & outputs instead of XLR inputs & outputs. Most home audio equipment is not 19″ rack mounted.
You can see what the front & back of a DJ equalizer looks like at these two links.

You hook up the preamp’s outputs to the equalizer’s inputs & the equalizer’s outputs to the amplifier’s inputs.
If your old equalizers are DJ equalizers & your stereo does not have XLR inputs & outputs you won’t be able to use them unless the equalizers also have unbalanced 1/4″ TRS inputs & outputs. Not all 1/4″ TRS inputs & outputs are unbalanced, so you need to make sure they are not balanced 1/4″ TRS inputs & outputs.
You CAN NOT mix balanced & unbalanced inputs & outputs.
If your equalizers have unbalanced 1/4″ TRS inputs & outputs & your stereo has RCA jacks you will need four 1/4″ TRS to RCA cables.

If you are using something like a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system, it’s not very likely you will be able to hook up an equalizer to it.
1. Most equalizers only have two channels.
2. Most Surround sound systems have a receiver instead of a preamp & an amplifier.
You can use an equalizer between a CD player (SACD player, tape deck, MD deck, CDR deck, or DAT deck) & surround sound receiver.
Just hook the CD (or other audio player) outputs to the equalizer’s inputs & the equalizer’s outputs to the receiver’s CD inputs, or any other Line inputs.
