Electronic Studio

What program can i use to make electronic music?
I would want to start making my own music but i don’t know what program to use. I want to be able to make progressive house, trance, and minimal techno. What would be best, ableton, fl studio, logic, or any other program out there, it dont matter how hard it is to use, i just want a good quality program. Also what other equipment can i get to start on my home studio? Thanx in advance
I’ve been using Cakewalk SONAR for several years now, and I have to say the mixing engine is excellent. I’m a few versions behind by now, but the list of improvements and additions makes me very interested in buying an upgrade when I can afford it.
I’ve also been using Ableton Live for a few years. It’s collection of effects and sampled instruments is very nice. Unlike my old version of SONAR Live comes with a basic sampler, called Simpler (the full one is called Sampler), a sample-based drum machine, built-in support for sample stretching/pitch-shifting, and native VST support. Unfortunately the mixing engine doesn’t sound quite as good, at least to my ears (grant you it’s a small difference).
I’d love it if I could take the best features of each and put them together into a Frankenstein’s uber DAW.
Other equipment you might want to look at: a good pair of mixing speakers. Try to do your final mixing on loud speakers instead of headphones. Headphones never give you a true reproduction. So you’ll want a decent pair that have a wide frequency range with flat response, a good dynamic range, and minimal harmonic distortion (2-ways or 3-ways). And try to stay away from 2.1 sets with a subwoofer. Having only one speaker tackle the bass for both left and right channels is a terrible mistake. You could end up with too much or too little bass and not know it because of phasing cancellation/stacking between left and right channels. If you’re going to mix for 5.1/6.1/7.1 surround, make sure you get have a sound card with the right output(s) and set of speakers to match.
If you play piano you might want to get a MIDI keyboard, either a synthesizer or just a MIDI controller.
If you plan on doing vocals or recording acoustic instruments you’ll need a good general purpose mic, like a Shure SM57. You’ll also want to get an audio interface or mic preamp with XLR inputs, so you can plug the mic in. A good audio interface/mic preamp will usually give you one or more unbalanced line-ins, so you can connect a cheaper mic or instrument cable (e.g. electric guitar).
You can also look at various software synths, like FM8, Absynthe, or Massive by Native Instruments, or mixing and mastering effects like those offered by Waves, or sampled instrument collections like EWQL’s various sound libraries.
It would be easy to spend way too much on any of these things. The important thing is to find tools you like using, not to keep getting more tools. You’ll probably find yourself most comfortable working with a small set of things you know very well. That’s when you know you’re doing it right.
