Colored Beams
What to do with railroad tie ceiling beams?
we just purchased a 60′s ranch home in SoCal and the family room has dark colored treated wood beams (6×6 or so) just like railroad ties on the ceiling. The really tough thing is that they are not evenly spaced, but do appear to be structural (it is an add-on room). Any ideas on how to change – our color scheme for the rest of the areas is Behr Calm Air for the walls and a nice semi-gloss white for trim, furniture is dark mahogany, off-white/tan carpet (fortune cookie).
I’m thinking of covering or painting, but am stumped and there’s not much height to lose if covered up…Any great ideas or resources out there?

One detail I left off is the beams have large bolts used to secure them to the ceiling – not sure if for real or effect…
I would doubt that they are structural. That style of beam was a popular feature in the 60′s and 70′s. Come down from the ceiling about 2″ and drill a small hole in the side of the beam. If you find a void, get out the bar and pull these down.They would be nailed to a 2×4, which is nailed to a ceiling joist. Take them down, patch the ceiling, and paint. Good luck.
